weeks 3-4: rain, rain go away!
This week we started playing soccer! We have begun working on our dribbling and passing skills and will work on adding these skills into small-sided games next week. The kids have been playing their favorite game of Sharks and Minnows with a soccer style twist! This helps reinforce dribbling, changing direction, and being faced with an added pressure of defense. We have also been playing some grid style keep away giving everyone a turn of being a defender which has been strengthening not only our defense, but our passing skills as well. We are hoping that next week will have better weather so we can stay outside and have more space to play! Stay tuned!
Week 2...can you believe it?
Can you believe that we are already two weeks in? This school year is off to a fast and fun start! We are beginning to settle into our routines and get back into the swing of things. We are participating in some problem solving activities that focus on communication and cooperation before we start playing some more competitive games. All of us play with HEART: Honesty, Energy, Attitude, Respect, and Teamwork. Specifically this week we have played 4 Colors Tag and Pairs Tag and did an activity called Stepping Stones where students must work together to build a "bridge" to cross the river without touching the ground. They have done a great job verbalizing and sharing ideas and supporting each other!
Next week: Soccer!!

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year!
Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a great, relaxing, and fun summer. Our first week here at SMS is off to a great start! We are all happy to be back and ready to play. For the first few weeks of school, we will focus on classroom routines and procedures to create a learning environment that is safe and positive for all. We will be playing some fun games that incorporate fitness, communication, and problem solving all while having fun! One of our SMS favorites is Terrority Tag. We are looking forward to another great year!
Please check out the new PE schedule to find out when your class has PE (under the 'About' section).

Weeks 20-22: Basketball skills & Drills
In SMS PE this week, our ballers are enjoying some March Madness! We begin our basketball unit with some ball handling and dribbling skills before moving on to passing and shooting drills. This is a great way to introduce basketball to our students right before the big 5th grade vs. Staff basketball game!
Weeks 17-19: Floor Hockey and snow fun!
What a crazy couple of weeks we had! With all of the snow days and delays, each class got a chance to enjoy some fun out in the snow! Grades 3-5 got a chance to test out our snow shoes in the trails while grades K-2 got to hike to our favorite sledding spot!
Classes also got a chance to play and officiate some floor hockey, pillo polo, and and pillo polo bombardment! Our emphasis was on striking skills in a fun game scenario.

Weeks 14-16: Gymnastics
In January it is Gymnastics month! We are blessed here at Stratham Memorial School to have some really cool gymnastics equipment. In PE, students will start with floor routines practicing a variety of moves from forward rolls to cartwheels, headstands to handstands, and some awesome stunts like the tripod and twister stand up! Once we progress from the floor, we begin adding in new elements like the vault, where students can jump onto and off of the vault while practicing simple moves in the air. Students also have the opportunity to climb the knotted and straight ropes as well as the cargo net! The pull up bar, peg board, and wall climber are some other things that our students are exposed to increase their upper body strength which is very benefitial in gymnastics. The kids love to Rock 'N Roll!
WEEKS 12-13: SCOOTERS AND WINTER WONDERLAND!
Walking in a Winter Wonderland!
For the past 2 weeks, all PE classes have had the honor of earning their scooter licenses! These scooter licenses are unique to SMS where all students have the privilege of earning their license by driving safe and responsible. These licenses are a fun way for students to learn the rules of the road while driving their "cars". For the week leading up to winter break, students have the chance to participate in our famous Winter Wonderland (8 creative stations involving holiday games) and Winter Relays (winter cooperative challenges). Some of the activities that students will be participating in are: ski tow, moguls, sleigh rides, pond hockey, and belly whoppin'! However you choose to spend you winter break, stay warm and have fun!

weeks 9-11: Throwing & Catching
Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and mini vacation! We are finishing up our throwing and catching units with some of SMS's most popular games: Satellites, Pinball, Clean Your Room, and Bombardment! We have been practicing both overhand and underhand throwing, catching, and defending throws.
Happy halloween from the fish!
Weeks 7&8: Field hockey
BRRRR! It's cold outside! Students are still participating in outdoor PE to get in some outdoor field hockey games! We will be moving inside very shortly so they can experience indoor field hockey too! Until then, it is very important that all students are prepared for outdoor PE: coats/jackets, mittens, and warm layers!
Weeks 5 & 6: Flag rugby
October 12, 2016
After finishing up the soccer unit, Ms. Locke's classes have started to play Flag Rugby! This unit requires A LOT of running, which keeps all of the students active and involved for the full 45 minutes. We compare and contrast rugby and football very often to help in the understanding of game play. The hardest concept to grasp is that passes must be lateral or backwards! Rugby is beginning to become a favorite unit at SMS!

Week 2 in PE
September 9, 2016
This week in PE our upper elementary classes (3-5) have begun working on team building and cooperation activities. Students are working on communication (both verbal and non-verbal), teamwork, and problem solving skills that will help them be successful in future units. Some of the activities they have done are partner stand ups, silent line ups, and an activity called Stepping Stones.
Our lower elementary classes (K-2) are working on Chasing, Fleeing, and Dodging skills and games to practice changing direction while keeping each other safe! Their favorite tag games are Sharks & Minnows and Stuck in the Mud!
We ask all of our students to follow three basic rules: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible...of course while being active and having fun! Their PE homework is to go outside and play every day for at least an hour! Stay tuned for adventures in PE :)
